Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper

May 27, 2023 ·Updated January 17, 2024

PlantPaper is my current toilet paper of choice. It ships in a cardboard box withouth any extra packaging material. Inside there are paperboard boxes that each hold 8 rolls of unwrapped toilet paper.

I really like that one side of the paper has grippies on it, I feel like I need fewer wipes to get cleaned up. It also held up really well - I only need two squares and they don’t tear through like other eco-friendly brands. I actually found that this did better than the Costco 2-ply toilet paper.

Other Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper Reviews

REEL REEL toilet paper didn’t hold up well - I needed at least 3 pieces to get a good wipe and would still tear sometimes. Each roll is individually packaged, which looks nice, but is kind of a pain to make sure it ends up in the recycling vs the garbage. However, it is convenient that it’s available at Target which makes it by far the fastest to get in a pinch.

Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper I Haven’t Tried (and Why)

Toilet UNpaper® Roll Unfortunately, I can’t get my mind around having cloths covered in poop going through my washer. And, while I’m sure they are sanitary after washing, it won’t stop me from thinking about how someone elses poop cloth is touching my butt. Also, this is not an experience that I would want to force onto guests, so I would still want regular toilet paper as a backup.

Bidet I’ve heard this is the most eco friendly because you don’t need any toilet paper, or very little, to get clean. However, this is a much larger lifestyle change than I’m ready for at the moment, and, again, I’d still want to have toilet paper around for kids and guests.

Price-Per-Month Calculation for Switching to PlantPaper Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper

I bought a 16 pack of toilet paper rolls for $42.00. I didn’t order more until about 3 months later. With shipping times, and taking into account that we were still using up some of our other toilet paper, I figure it took about 2 months to use up all 16 rolls. So, the approximate monthly cost for PlantPaper is $42.00 / 2 = $21.00.

Before switching, I bought the 30 roll packs from Costco for $23.99 and it took us about 4 months to go through it. So, the approximate monthly cost for Costco’s toilet paper is $23.99 / 4 = $5.99.
